In 1977, Doug and Elena Ake had a dream to start a small marine repair shop to service the local boating community. In a small rented building at a local marina in Ocean City, Maryland, the dream came true and Ake Marine was opened offering diving and mechanical maintenance services to the local mariners. As the business grew in the 80’s with the addition of fishing tackle and a reel repair shop, so did Doug’s reputation as a fair priced, honest mechanic who had access to a full selection of marine supplies for commercial, charter and private boats.

As the years passed, the number of satisfied customers grew. Doug stopped diving but boat mechanics, captains and mates continued to access his knowledge and supply of parts they needed. In 1990, near the Ocean City inlet on the commercial harbor, a much larger retail store was opened. Live and frozen baits were added and marine supplies and fishing tackle inventories were greatly expanded. While Doug was running the marine activities, Elena started an apparel department that has grown to include many top brands of rain gear, shirts, shorts, sunglasses, footwear and more.
